     Here's hoping all of you DADS out there enjoyed a wonderful, Father's Day weekend with your families!  I especially hope you enjoyed the little gift from your #1 fan!!  We sure enjoyed making them!

COMMERICAL PROJECTS:  Students did an AMAZING job so far on their commercials and posters!  I am thoroughly impressed with the level of enthusiasm and drive my little players have shown so far!  Today, we continue on with the remaining 10 commercials!  I asked each child who has presented, if they would like me to post their video.  Only those who said yes will be posted.  Enjoy!

This week will be our last 'normal' week.  Please return any and all books that may belong to my personal library from the take home reading pouches.  I am collecting all pouches and books this week.  Check under those beds, in drawers and other creative places books may find themselves in!  Thank you!

Gr. 3 Science Tests:  Well, as most you gr. 3 parents have heard, I allowed students to use their Science duo tangs for their test yesterday on Soil!  Sounds great, right?  Sadly, students did not make great use of this opportunity when answering the final big question of the test.  Please look over tests tonight, sign and return tomorrow.


COMMERICAL / POSTER Projects:
Today I conferenced with students on their commercials projects and many students are well on their way with a great script so far!  However, there are a few who hadn't even started yet!  This assignment was given last week and students have already had 5 days to work on this.  I expect everyone to be ready THIS FRIDAY with a one-minute commerial and a poster board.  I am available for conferencing and feedback for those who need it all week.  Please make sure your child will be ready this Friday. I sent home their Writing books today for them to work on it.



4rth ANNUAL SPELLING BEE:  Every year, the students of Team Wilson challenge Mrs. Ferrato's class of grade 3s!  All students will participate.  We are following national spelling bee rules.  Ask your child about it!  The spelling bee will held in the final week of school.  Judges are Mrs. Ferrato, Mrs. Wilson and Mr. Dennis.  We will begin with the 0-100 sight words and work our way up to as high as the 601-700 sight word page. In preparation of this challenge, we will continue with our weekly spelling test for one more week.  Brush up on those spelling words, I like to WIN!  I have a reputation to uphold! Lol...

Hopefully, most grade 3s took home their Science duo tangs as directed Thursday to review for this week's Science test - our last one!  If not, we will do a review Monday and have the test on Tuesday.

Students should review highlighted material in their Science duo tangs.  Special emphasis on the leveled questions...
Why is soil important to Humans / Animals / Earth?
What are the 3 Rs and and give examples of each.
What is Composting and why is it helpful?
Why are worms important?



Also, ALL THIS WEEK, homework will be to work on their Media Literacy project that will be due Friday for presenting.  It involves a one-minute commerical and a poster board.  See rubric and information note / blog I sent earlier this week.





Black pouches - I am collecting any and all BLACK independent reading pouches that students used all year for at home reading.  Please check your child's bedroom / home for any books that they may have borrowed from my persoanl library and please return this upcoming week.  Many books are still out and I am trying to preserve them for years to come.  I've marked my books with RW on the inside cover or with a guided reading level.  Thank you for taking some time to look!

DRAMA:  Students did a terrific of presenting their skits in 'Homophone Hubbub' to neighbouring classes!  Well done all!  Be sure to ask your child about his/her role!

Ok, now that all students have an invention / new product, we spent time today working on a slogan that will go along with their product to help sell the product.  Some are VERY CREATIVE!  Tonight, please ensure that your child has completed their product name AND slogan.

I am sending home the poster board to be used for the poster.
Make sure to include...

1. Name of product/invention 
2. Slogan
3. Detailed picture or illustration of invention
4. Where is can be sold
5. How much it cost

Be creative and have fun making a colourful, eye-catching poster to go along with their invention. Work on it at your own pace, but remember to include ALL necessary criteria...please see information sheet and rubric.  All posters and commercials are due next Friday, June 16th.

MEDIA LITERACY 
PROJECT

Due Friday, June 16th


TASK:
● Students are to invent a new product, create a poster advertising this new product and present a 1-minute commercial (no longer, no shorter) to the class to try to convince people to buy their product.  Students CAN bring in a prototype of their invention if they have one.  Otherwise, a detailed drawing will do.

There are 2 Components to this Project…

                            1. Poster 50%
                            2. Oral Presentation 50%

Commercial Presentations MUST INCLUDE:

                             ● name of invention/product
                             ● an explanation of why this product is useful
                             ● detailed picture of invention/product
                             ● a slogan to go along with product (can rhyme to be memorable)
                             ● cost of product
                             ● where this product is sold (online, in stores, by phone, etc)


    Encourage your child to show enthusiasm about his/her product and to sell it by convincing the
audience of why it’s so incredible. Have your child pay close attention to commercials on TV for
ideas. I will send home the rubric that I will use to evaluate students. Please use it as a guide as you create your poster/commercial.  I am sending home the project criteria and rubric for you to read over together with your child.  I already discussed all of the details with the class and today we started brainstorming ideas.  Each student must come to class tomorrow with at least 5 ideas for a new product/invention.  I also want them to circle the idea that they will be choosing.  I will give a thumbs up or down depending on the idea.  Try to stay away from products that are too complicated like robots, machines, etc.  They must be able to explain the use and it should be appealing to wide audience.  Class time will be given to work on this in addition to all of next week for homework.  Students are expected to spend up to 30 minutes a night every day next week working on this project.  Presentations begin Friday, June 16th.

Final Month!

For this final month of school, homework will only be what has  not been completed in class.  That means, whatever your child brings home for homework, it was work that did not get finished in class time.  Usually, that means your child wasn't using their class time efficiently...so, if you work hard during the day, there shouldn't be any homework other than reviewing spelling and practising the recorder!

Gr. 3 - This week, we will be wrapping up our Science unit on Soil.  Test will be on Monday next week.  Please review over the weekend.  I will be sure to send home the green Science duo tangs.

S.O.W.  - Back by popular demand!  We are starting up the Song of the Week since students enjoyed it so much!  So, poetry goes on vacation (indefinitely) and songs return with a vengeance!
